My Story
I grew up thinking I wasn't that sharp. I was placed in a gifted group in elementary school, but my young mind assumed that being different meant being deficient. My parents sacrificed a ton to get me into an exceptional private school where I once again misconstrued a number of elements in the situation and devalued myself. But the quality of the education there was outrageously great (and honestly carried me until I got deep into university). Then came public high school where I fulfilled my belief about being a lazy underachiever, which persisted past my first semester of university wherein I failed literally every class.
After some stumbles and dabbling, I was fortunate enough to have the bizarre and unique opportunity to start a video game studio back around 2002, which I ran with some folks for a few years before an uneasiness started creeping in, about my place in the world, my self, my mind. As weeks and months passed, I recognized a growing curiosity, one which turned into an tremendous hunger for philosophy. There was a mystery there, but also a confidence. To move beyond my limitations, I needed new ways to explore and think, ways to challenge the conceptual models I was holding onto, and ultimately the capacity to generate my own internal evolution purposefully and critically.
That's when things started to click. Thinking about how to think came naturally. More than that, it was invigorating; I felt like I was coming alive for the first time since the freedom of childhood. When you're thriving and loving every second, you can't really fail. Even when you do, it just feels like success by different means. And I was thriving and a half, ultimately graduating with honor despite the range of struggles and failures early on.
From there, I considered two clearly related paths - an MBA in sustainable business or a PhD in philosophy (of mind, exploring synthetic consciousness). Out of those two, I picked the most obvious choice of...becoming an artist. I followed that challenging and enriching path for the better part of a decade before making the only rational move of...becoming a streamer on Twitch (2014 to present). What a clear and totally normal path!
Historically, I've sometimes had a pretty outrageous work ethic. As an artist, I often found myself working 10-16+ hours a day for sometimes a couple months at a time, and then take off a few weeks for a break. (I even had one painting that required 42+ hours of continuous work; no sleep, just painting, or the process would fail!) As a streamer, I started with some intense hours in order to rapidly build the business, but leveled that off to something manageable. At some point, I got caught up in the process and overworked for two years, typically seven days a week for 10-16 hours a day. The profound and intense burnout was no surprise to anybody. I even managed to burn out again within what was supposed to be my burnout recovery!
It turned out to be a blessing that ultimately primed me for coaching. The journey of recovery included a lot of soul searching, auditing my heart and mind and soul to find what needed cast away and what new self needed forged. Who did I need to leave behind, and who did I need to become? Later in that process, I discovered Heroic (https://www.heroic.us/), which I leveraged into some of the most epic life changes I've ever experienced. And it turned out they offered a coaching program! You better believe I leapt at that opportunity. Now before you stands (writes?) a certified Heroic coach! /flex
Coaching
I arrived at coaching the same way I have approached everything else in my life: abruptly, and with immense passion. Since I was a wee lad, I've had unusual perspectives. An underlying force in my life has been the concept of 'becoming,' and my deep drive to flow within it. 'Becoming' is the emergence of a new self into a new world. Richard Bach wrote, "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly." The butterfly doesn't emerge to experience the same place it left behind. It has changed fundamentally, possessing novel drives and entirely different ways of sensing and moving through the world. The new shape to its body and mind brings forth a new shape to everything it will ever experience. 'Becoming' is a force that returns to my mind at every stage of my life, in every season, on the pages of each chapter. It's at the end of the path that I will never finish traveling, a destination at which I'll never arrive.
All that in mind, coaching is the natural home for my life's efforts. It doesn't just feel obvious, it almost feels...necessary. The realization I had is that my passion for streaming, that of connecting deeply with a bonded community over years and decades, pairs so perfectly with my obsession with 'becoming.' The love for people and the fascination with emergent greatness is the exact right recipe for coaching!
What does it look like to leap beyond community itself and dig deep into the Big Journey with others?
What happens when I dedicate all of my work - a significant commitment of energy, time, and life - to cultivating the wisdom of philosophy and the depth of great thinkers alongside the best of applicable science?
What happens when I direct all of that toward helping guide the 'becoming' of others?
What happens when I direct all of me toward the best of you?
Mind
I am a systems thinker with integrative intelligence. An interwoven aspect of what I see in my mind and how I explore it is holographic - each piece represents the whole, where every individual component contains the fundamental information of the entire system, and understanding the system guides you toward understanding the nature of the parts.
I tend to automatically see a connection between entirely disparate domains, like similarities among video game level design and the utility of metaphors, or how a particular solution to a culinary problem relates to consciousness as an emergent property. Every subject is up for grabs when my mind is churning, and it's always churning. There is sinew among it all.
Within coaching, I leverage my innate gifts and talents, my cultivated skills, and my deep drives to guide others toward guiding themselves. I want to help you develop an internal ecosystem that thrives independently, one capable of absorbing volatility and chaos, using that exact friction to adapt, evolve, and become.
Just Me
My pride and joy: I'm a dad! My partner and I had our baby girl in 2025 (instead of an age, in case I deprioritize ever updating this particular page). My family started in my 40's. There are some downsides to that, but I definitely think the advantages are huge. So many more lessons learned, more experience, a better understanding of myself (powers and faults, all), an incredibly better perspective than in my earlier years, and so on.
I'm a massive Marvel and Star Wars nerd. Massive. In the rest of the nerd realm, I'm also a lifelong Warhammer 40k fan with a pretty robust collection of figurines, which are currently retired to a closet. I love sci-fi books more than most anything else in fiction (especially hard sci-fi). Some of the big ones for me are The Expanse, The Three Body Problem, a whole lot of David Brin's work, Kim Stanley Robinson, and plenty more.
While no longer a career artist, I still make art, but much less than I'd like. It lights me up in ways literally nothing else can. My continued creative obsession is with mountainscapes, inspired by Shan Shui. ('Artist' was the one life path + passion that has remained consistent since I was a tiny kid.)
I grew up in Houston, Texas, moved to a couple other states, and ultimately landed in Washington. This place is a dream come true for me. I live with my partner and child on a mountainside with trees galore, mild weather, really long summer days and really short winter days (a spectrum I weirdly love that keeps me in better touch with cycles, phases, and time), easy access to hiking (even literally down the road from me), and so much more. No income tax is pretty cool, too.
